BEACHES
Beaches in Omiš
There is a reason why the two or three weeks you are going to spend on the Adriatic are called holidays. Rest and relaxation at the beach or in other words swimming and sunbathing, are the favourite activities of most tourists on summer vacation. Luckily, Omiš offers almost endless possibilities in this aspect, too.
From big sandy beaches to small, secluded pebble coves, from long shallows ideal for kids to the deep big blue opening up before you just meters from the shore – Omiš truly has something to offer to everyone.
Those who prefer sandy beaches offering all kinds of activities and entertainment will definitely choose to visit camping in the center of the town or the central town beach known among locals as The big beach, where hundreds of tourists can be found enjoying the sun and the sea every day of the summer.
In addition to the sun and the sea, all beaches in Omiš and other big beaches of the Riviera also offer a wide variety of entertainment and leisure activities such as jet-skis, boat or kayak rental or sea trampolines, and at two locations on the Riviera (camping in the center of the town and the beach in Ruskamen) you can also try the fun and extremely addictive windsurfing.
Those eager for a bit more intimate setting and true rest and relaxation will have no problem choosing among a number of beautiful coves in the villages of the Riviera: Brzet, Nemira, Stanići, Lokva Rogoznica, Medići, Marušići, Pisak… Almost every inch of the Omiš Riviera coast is suitable for swimming and finding the perfect beach is just a pleasant concern for many tourists coming here year after year.
Although most beaches can be reached by car, some of the most beautiful secluded coves are quite well hidden and are accessible only from the sea. One of them is the famous cove of Vruja – according to many, the top scuba diving location in Croatia and a place under which, as a local legend has it, an ancient sunken city is hidden!
And if the almost 20 kilometers of beaches and coves lining the coast of the Omiš Riviera are still not enough for you, let us only mention that just a kilometer away from the town centre in the direction of Split you’ll find the longest stretch of sandy beaches in all of Croatia! It is no wonder, then, that more than 300 hundred years ago the inhabitants of the coastal village of Krilo Jesenice started the tradition of so called salbunjerstvo – a special technique of digging out sand from the sea bottom to later be sold and used mostly as building material.
Over the decades old sand digging ships known as salbunjeri gradually stopped serving their initial purpose and are today mostly used as vintage wooden ships for tourist cruises on the Adriatic. The tradition of salbunjerstvo in the villages north of Omiš also became extinct with time, and the sand from which their inhabitants used to make a living today builds the longest stretch of sandy beaches on the Adriatic.
Beaches in places such as Duće, Krilo and Dugi Rat are especially attractive due to their accessibility. All the way from Omiš to Split you will practically be driving only two or three meters away from the beach, so you can choose the perfect location for all-day rest and relaxation on the sand just sitting in your car.
